How to Re-Engage Cold Leads on LinkedIn Without Re-Pitching

Updately Team·2026-10-31

Every outbound team has a pile of people who almost booked. They accepted the connection, replied once or twice, asked a good question, and then the thread went quiet. Weeks later they are still a better bet than a fresh cold list: they know your name, they have seen your offer, and something about it interested them. Most teams either forget them or send "just bumping this", which reads as the same pitch with less effort.

Short answer: gather the people who connected or talked with you before but never booked, then run Updately's "Re-engage warm leads" template. It sends one short AI message that mentions something genuinely new (a result, a feature, a case study) and asks whether it changes anything, then a voice note four days later offering a free walkthrough. It never repeats the original pitch. If they reply, the AI agent asks what has changed on their side and shares your booking link when they are ready.

Key Takeaways

QuestionAnswer
Who is this for?People who connected or talked with you before but never booked
How many steps? Two: a message on day 0 and a voice note on day 4
Does it send a connection request? No. It is for people you are already connected to
What does the first message say?One line about something new, and whether it changes anything for them
What does it never do?Re-pitch the original offer

Why warm leads go cold

People rarely stop replying because they decided no. More often:

  • The timing was wrong. A client launch, a hire or a quarter-end pushed it down the list.
  • They asked about price, did not love the number, and did not want to say so.
  • Someone else needed to be involved, and that conversation never happened.
  • The follow-ups repeated the same message, so there was nothing new to answer.

The first three fix themselves with time. The fourth is the one you control, and it is the whole idea behind this template: come back only with something that is actually new.

When this template is the right choice

Use it when you have a pool of leads who have heard from you before. Typical cases:

  • Prospects from an earlier campaign who replied, showed interest and stopped.
  • People who accepted your connection request but never answered the opener.
  • Calls that were booked but never happened.
  • Closed-lost deals from a while ago, where the reason was timing.

It is not for people who never connected with you. The template has no invitation step, so it only messages existing connections. For people who never accepted, add an invitation at the front in the Workflow tab, or run them through a first-touch campaign such as direct outreach to agency owners instead.

It does not replace the Follow-ups card, which catches a reply going quiet within days. This template restarts conversations quiet for weeks or months.

Where the list comes from

  • Lead lists from earlier campaigns. Leads from past campaigns stay in your lead lists, so you can re-target the ones who never booked.
  • Network. Your 1st-degree connections, filtered by keywords such as a job title or industry. Useful for people you connected with outside any campaign. More on this in warm outbound from your LinkedIn network.
  • CSV import. Export no-shows and old closed-lost deals from your CRM with their LinkedIn URLs, and import them.
  • Profile viewers. A past prospect who viewed your profile recently is a good one to put first.

Then clean the list. Remove anyone who clearly said no, anyone who is now a customer, and anyone already talking to a colleague. If people have changed jobs, they belong in a fresh campaign about their new company, not a re-engagement one.

The sequence, day by day

DayStepWhat it does
0Something new (AI)Personalised per person. Acknowledges they spoke with you before, mentions one new thing from your Knowledge (a result, a feature, a case study) in one line, and asks if it changes anything for them. Short, personal, no re-pitch
4Voice note check-in (AI)Sent as a voice note, written from the conversation so far. A short, friendly check-in that offers a free walkthrough instead of a call

Two steps is deliberate. These people already know what you sell; five touches would turn a warm lead into an annoyed one.

After a gap, a real voice feels less automated than another block of text, and a walkthrough of their own setup is a lower bar than a sales call.

The sequence stops as soon as they reply, and the AI agent takes over.

How the AI agent answers replies

With Reply autopilot on, the objective is: restart the conversation and book the call that didn't happen. The rules:

  • They reply: it acknowledges it has been a while and asks what has changed on their side. It listens before it sells.
  • They asked about price before: it offers a free walkthrough of their setup instead of quoting a number again. Quoting the same figure is how the thread died last time.
  • They are interested now: it shares your booking link.
  • They say "still not now": it asks whether it is fine to check back in a couple of months, then uses END THE CHAT.

The built-in hand-offs apply as well. The agent marks HUMAN INTERVENTION if a question needs facts it does not have, or if they share an email, phone number or calendar link, or ask to move to email or phone. Once the call is booked, it thanks them and ends the chat.

Follow-ups if they reply and go quiet again

The template sets a single follow-up, 3 days after a reply goes quiet: one short, friendly check-in that mentions something new, with a yes/no question. One is enough. Someone who replies to a re-engagement message and drifts off again is telling you the timing is still not right.

What "something new" should be

The first message is only as good as what you give it. Before launch, put these in Knowledge:

  • A recent customer result you can describe accurately.
  • Features or integrations shipped since you first spoke.
  • A new case study, ideally from a company like theirs.
  • Changes to packaging or onboarding, if you have them. The AI only states what Knowledge says, so keep it current.

Then:

  • Files & Links: add the case study or a short demo video with a "use when" note, so the agent can share it when asked.
  • Booking link: required, because the interest rule shares it.
  • Voice for voice notes: set it up, since day 4 is spoken.
  • Train the voice: paste two or three of your own messages so the opener sounds like the person they spoke to before.

Common mistakes

  • "Just following up." No news, no reason to reply.
  • Re-sending the old pitch with a new first line. They have read it.
  • Re-engaging too soon. Wait until you have something real to say.
  • Ignoring a clear no. Leaving those people out protects your reputation and your account.
  • Mixing in people who never connected. The template has no invitation step.

Launching it in Updately

  1. Create a campaign on the LinkedIn account those leads are connected to, so the message continues the old thread.
  2. On the AI Agent tab, click Start from a template and pick Re-engage warm leads.
  3. Add your new results, features and case studies to Knowledge, and check the booking link.
  4. In the simulator, use Connected leads and try "what's changed?", "is it still the same price?", "still not now" and a curveball.
  5. Run Test Sequence with a real lead from the list.
  6. Add the list and activate.

The other agency templates, including competitor and outbound-topic engagement, are on the campaign templates page. Every built-in template is at /campaign-templates.

FAQ

How do you follow up with leads who never booked a call?

Wait until you have something new, send one short message about it, and ask whether it changes anything. Do not repeat the original pitch. If they asked about price before, offer a walkthrough of their setup rather than the number again.

How long should I wait before re-engaging a cold lead?

Long enough for something to have changed: a new result, a feature, a case study, or their own situation. A re-engagement message with nothing new in it is just another follow-up.

Can I use this for people who never accepted my connection request?

Not as it is. The template only messages existing connections. Add an invitation step at the start, or use a first-touch campaign for them.

Why send the check-in as a voice note?

After weeks of silence, a voice note feels personal in a way another text does not. If you would rather not use voice, switch the step to text on the Workflow tab. For more on building warm pipelines, see warm outbound vs cold outbound.
