Reddit RSS Shutdown (Nov 13): How to Keep Your Reddit Alerts

Updately Team·2026-11-05

The Reddit RSS shutdown, in one paragraph

The Reddit RSS shutdown takes effect on 13 November 2026. On 30 September Reddit told moderators (in r/modnews) and developers (in r/redditdev) that it will stop supporting RSS feeds, stop taking new public API access requests, and close the remaining public Data API by March 2027. Reddit's reason is that RSS has become a common route for large-scale scraping and automated abuse. For anyone who used RSS outside a community they moderate, Reddit was blunt: "there is no replacement." If your team gets Reddit mentions of your brand, your competitors or buying phrases through an RSS feed in Slack, Zapier, Make or a feed reader, those alerts stop in about a week.

This guide covers what is ending and when, which workflows break, and a step-by-step plan to replace them before 13 November.

Sources: TechCrunch (30 September 2026), The Next Web (30 September 2026) and PPC Land (4 October 2026), all reporting Reddit's own posts in r/modnews and r/redditdev.

The full timeline

Reddit is closing open access in stages. These are the dates Reddit gave, as reported by the sources above.

DateWhat happens
30 September 2026Reddit announces the changes in r/modnews and r/redditdev
31 October 2026Reddit stops accepting new public API access requests
10 November 2026Migration progress update and deadline reminder
13 November 2026RSS feed support ends
30 November 2026Registration closes for the Developer Platform app migration bounty
12 January 2027Access starts closing for unregistered apps and bots
23 February 2027Another progress update and reminder
March 2027Public API access closes for all remaining apps and users (no exact day given)

Two related changes ship "in the coming months" without a fixed date:

  • Old Reddit will only be available to logged-in moderators and to users who have used it in the past six months.
  • Automod loses its remove, filter and approve actions in new communities and in communities that have never used them; Reddit's Rules Hub and Automations become the default.

Why Reddit is doing this

Reddit frames it as an abuse problem: RSS and open API access are where most automated scraping comes from. The business context matters too. TechCrunch points out that Reddit's "other revenue", which includes data licensing to AI companies, grew 24% year over year to $43 million in Q2 2026. Free, unauthenticated access to the same conversations undercuts that.

For anyone who monitors Reddit, the takeaway is simple: the free, open routes into Reddit data are closing, and the remaining routes are either Reddit's own Developer Platform or a commercial data agreement. This is the same pressure that closed GummySearch, which shut down after failing to agree a commercial licence for Reddit's Data API (see our GummySearch migration guide).

What breaks on 13 November

Anything that reads a Reddit URL ending in .rss. In practice that means:

  • Slack's RSS app (/feed subscribe) pointed at a subreddit or a Reddit search feed, such as https://www.reddit.com/search.rss?q="your brand"&sort=new.
  • Zapier, Make, n8n and IFTTT automations that use an "RSS: new item in feed" trigger on a Reddit URL, for example "new post in r/SaaS mentioning our category, send to Slack".
  • Feed readers such as Feedly, Inoreader or NetNewsWire following subreddits or saved searches.
  • Home-grown scripts that poll Reddit RSS feeds and push results into a sheet, a CRM or a channel.
  • User and comment feeds, such as following a competitor's founder account through RSS.

What does not break on 13 November:

  • Apps that use the authenticated Data API keep working until access closes for unregistered apps from 12 January 2027, and for everyone else by March 2027, unless they move to the Developer Platform or have a commercial agreement.
  • Moderator workflows have an official path: Reddit recommends the Discord Relay Devvit app for mods who used RSS to watch their own community.
  • Monitoring tools that do not depend on Reddit's public RSS. Which ones those are is a question to ask each vendor (more on that below).

If a script of yours reads Reddit's unauthenticated .json listing URLs, treat it as at risk too. Reddit's announcements focus on RSS and the public Data API, so watch the 10 November update in r/redditdev before assuming it survives.

How to replace Reddit RSS alerts, step by step

1. Find every Reddit feed you depend on

Do this today, not on 12 November. Most teams have more feeds than they remember.

  1. Slack: in each channel that gets Reddit posts, type /feed list to see its subscriptions. Note every reddit.com feed and the channel it posts to.
  2. Zapier, Make and n8n: search your zaps and scenarios for reddit.com and for RSS triggers. Export the list with the keywords in each URL.
  3. Feed readers: export your OPML file and filter for reddit.com.
  4. Scripts: search your repos for reddit.com and .rss.

For each feed, write down three things: the keyword or subreddit, who acts on it, and what they do with it (reply, log it, pass it to sales).

2. Sort each feed by what it is for

What the feed doesReplace it with
Watches a community you moderateReddit's Discord Relay Devvit app
Brand, competitor or buying-phrase alerts for marketing or salesA keyword alert or social listening tool with Slack, Discord or email delivery
Research or data collection (exports, dashboards, AI pipelines)Reddit's Developer Platform, or a commercial data agreement with Reddit
Following a few subreddits to read themReddit's own app, followed communities and notifications

Most marketing and sales feeds land in the second row, so the rest of this guide focuses on those.

3. Pick a keyword alert tool that does not depend on RSS

Reddit itself has no keyword alerts: it can tell you about replies to your own posts and about communities you follow, but not that someone, somewhere, just named your competitor. So the RSS feed has to be replaced by a tool that watches Reddit for you. Prices below are each vendor's list prices as of October 2026; see the best tools for Reddit alerts for a fuller comparison.

ToolStarting priceDeliveryNotes
F5BotFree; Silver $9.99/month; Gold $49.99/monthEmail free; Slack, Discord and RSS/JSON on GoldUnfiltered on the free plan; see F5Bot alternatives
Syften$29.95/month (email); Slack from $49.95/monthEmail, Slack, webhooks on PROPrecise filter syntax, many developer communities
KWatch.ioFree for 2 Reddit keywords; Business $79/monthEmail; Slack, webhooks and API on BusinessSimple keyword monitoring
Updately$49/month, or $39/month billed annuallySlack, Discord and email on every planReddit streamed in real time with AI relevance and sentiment scoring; LinkedIn, X, Bluesky and Hacker News in the same listener

Before you commit, ask each vendor one question: how do you get Reddit data, and what happens to my alerts after March 2027? GummySearch customers learned the hard way that a Reddit monitoring tool is only as durable as its access to Reddit. Also check that you can export your alerts (CSV, webhooks or an API) so you are never locked in.

4. Rebuild your keywords, and make them better than the feed was

An RSS search feed matched one query and posted every hit. Rebuilding is a chance to fix the noise that made most teams mute their Reddit channel.

  • Split by intent. Brand names and "switching from [competitor]" phrases deserve real-time Slack alerts. A competitor name on its own, or broad problem phrases, belong in a daily digest.
  • Scope to subreddits where your buyers actually post, and exclude ones that only produce jokes or job posts.
  • Add comments. Reddit search RSS only covered posts, but a lot of buying intent ("we tried X, anyone know something better?") sits in comment threads. Most alert tools cover comments.
  • Use relevance scoring if your tool has it, so "can anyone recommend an alternative to [competitor]?" ranks above an off-topic post that happens to use the same word.

Our Reddit alerts in Slack guide has a keyword table and the step-by-step Slack setup for each tool.

5. Run both side by side until 13 November

Turn the new alerts on now and leave the old RSS feeds running. For the next week, compare what each one catches. You will usually find the new setup catches comments the feed missed and drops duplicates. On 13 November, delete the dead feeds and zaps so nobody wastes time debugging them.

6. If you build on Reddit data, register now

If you run your own app or bot on Reddit's API:

  • Register it on Reddit's app registration page before 12 January 2027, when access starts closing for unregistered apps. More than 14,000 apps and bots had registered by early October, according to PPC Land.
  • Plan the move to the Developer Platform (Devvit). It is TypeScript; a Reddit admin said Python support is not on the roadmap, so PRAW-based bots need a rewrite.
  • Check the bounty. Reddit's $1 million migration program pays $1,000 to each eligible app that applies by 30 November 2026 and completes the move.
  • For research or data products, the Developer Platform is not a bulk data feed. Expect to need a commercial agreement with Reddit.

What this means for B2B teams using Reddit for pipeline

Reddit is one of the few places buyers say out loud what they are shopping for: "looking for a tool that does X", "we're leaving Y, what did you switch to?" Many teams caught those posts with a free RSS feed into a Slack channel. That era is ending, and the change is part of a wider pattern: platforms are closing open access and charging for their data.

A few practical consequences:

  • Free DIY Reddit monitoring stops being an option after 13 November for most teams. Budget for a tool, or accept that you will only see what you search for by hand.
  • Platform risk is now a buying criterion. Ask vendors about their Reddit access the same way you would ask about security.
  • Speed still matters more than volume. A buying-intent post is worth most in its first hours, while the thread is active. Whatever replaces your RSS feed should alert in minutes, not in a daily batch, for the high-intent keywords.
  • Don't let Reddit be your only listening post. The same buyers ask the same questions on LinkedIn, X and Hacker News. Watching several platforms protects you if one of them changes its rules again.

Key takeaways

  • Reddit RSS feeds stop working on 13 November 2026. Reddit says there is no replacement for feeds outside communities you moderate.
  • New public API access requests stopped on 31 October 2026; unregistered apps start losing access on 12 January 2027, and the public API closes in March 2027.
  • Moderators should move to the Discord Relay Devvit app. Developers should register apps and plan a move to the Developer Platform.
  • Marketing and sales teams should inventory every Reddit feed now, replace them with a keyword alert tool, and run both in parallel until the cutoff.
  • When choosing a tool, ask how it gets Reddit data and whether you can export your alerts.

FAQ

When does the Reddit RSS shutdown happen?

Reddit stops supporting RSS feeds on 13 November 2026, according to its 30 September announcement in r/modnews.

Is there a replacement for Reddit RSS feeds?

Only for moderators: Reddit points them to the Discord Relay Devvit app for their own communities. For everyone else, Reddit said there is no replacement, so keyword alerts need a third-party monitoring tool.

Will Reddit search RSS feeds in Slack keep working?

No. Slack's RSS app subscriptions to Reddit subreddit or search feeds stop receiving posts when RSS support ends on 13 November 2026.

When does Reddit's public API shut down?

Reddit stopped taking new public API access requests on 31 October 2026, starts closing access for unregistered apps on 12 January 2027, and closes public API access for all remaining apps and users in March 2027.

How can I still get Reddit keyword alerts?

Use a Reddit alert or social listening tool that delivers to Slack, Discord or email, such as F5Bot, Syften, KWatch.io or Updately. Ask each vendor how it accesses Reddit data before you rely on it.
